What is a domain name?

  • Your domain name is your address on the Internet. All domain names are unique, as they refer to unique Internet addresses.

  • When you type in a website address in your web browser's address bar to go to that website, this website address is known as a domain name. It is just like typing in, which is our domain name.

  • A domain name provides you with an online identity and a contact point for your business, organization etc.

I already have a domain name - can I transfer it to IE Internet?

  • When you place an order with us you can specify that you are transferring from another hosting provider.
  • We will give you an IP address where you can upload a mirror of your website and email set-up in advance of the completion of the transfer. 

I want to register a domain name but do not want a website yet

  • You can register a domain name without having a website or email. This is referred to as ‘parking’.

  • IE Internet do not charge a parking fee for domain names.

The domain name I want is not available but does not appear to be in use; can I get it?

  • This means that the domain name has been purchased and is the property of someone else.
  • The only way to purchase this domain name is to contact the individual or organisation who registered it and arrange to purchase it from them.

How do I register a .com/.org/.net/.biz/.info domain name?

  • All you have to do is check that the domain name you have chosen is available here and proceed to order it.
  • Our sales and support team can advise you of domain name availability, as well as alternatives and additional domain extensions we recommend you consider for competitive or market reasons.

  • The registration of a domain name other than a .ie will take only a matter of hours.

How do I register a .ie domain name?

  • The IE Domain Registry (IEDR) controls all .ie domain name registrations. The IEDR is the body that has exclusive control over .ie domain names. Any application you make must comply with its rules and regulations.
  • As .ie domain names are intended mainly for businesses operating within Ireland and companies trading with Ireland, you will be required to submit documentation to accompany your application. It can be as simple as forwarding us your company number or your registered business name.
  • Businesses outside of Ireland will be asked to provide proof of trade with Ireland as well as a claim to the domain. This documentation should be forwarded in writing to IE Internet once your application has been made.
  • The IEDR will then review your application and either allow you to register the domain name, or reject your claim to it.
  • IE Internet Hostmasters are highly experienced in all the technicalities and regulations involved. They can advise you on the domain name best suited to your claim and on the documents you need to support your registration claim.

Can I register a .uk domain name?

  • IE Internet are registered with Nominet - the .uk registration body - so we can register or transfer .uk domain names.
  • However- we register these names with Nominet on our clients behalf and as such our clients also enter into a contract of registration with Nominet. As a result our clients are subject to Nominet’s terms and conditions.

What is the difference between a .ie and a .com domain name?

  • A .ie domain name is an Irish domain name, while a .com domain name is an International domain name. Both can be accessed from anywhere in the world in the same amount of time.
  • Anyone can register any available .com domain name. However, .ie domain names are soley intended for Irish businesses or companies doing businesses in Ireland.
  • A .ie domain can offer you and your business many benefits such as safety, security and a strong platform to engage your market. By choosing .ie you are guaranteeing that your website has a connection with Ireland, that your are who you say you are and that anybody who visits your site can do safely and securely.

How long does it take to register a domain name?

  • Once we receive your order, we will initiate the registration of your domain name.
  • Actual registration of your domain name can take from 6 hours (for .com/.uk/.net/.org/.info/.biz) to 3 days (for a .ie), with a further 24 to 48 hours required before the domain can be viewable on the Internet.

What characters are allowed in a domain name?

  • The only characters allowed in a domain name are the 26 letters of the alphabet, numbers 0-9 and dashes (-).
  • A domain name cannot begin or end with a dash, but it can contain a dash.
  • Symbols such as $£%&* are not allowed. You may have up to 63 characters in your domain name, but we would recommend you stay below 20 characters.
